will I need https:// if I just want to use paypal with my silvercart?
(its a pretty small shoppingcart)

For paypal you do Not Need ssl, all the critical stuff is being Handled at the paypal Website and outside silvercart.
It is recommended though and necessary for ipayment/Credit Card.
